Uruapan THE Place to Be For Semana Santa
By John K. Glaab, CIPS

Uruapan Michoacan has many treasures to enjoy year round. They range from natural and cultural beauty to its very diverse cuisine.
The Purepcha Indians have made major contributions to the culture and the cuisine. At the end of Calle Corregidora is the Mercado de Antojitos. Here you can enjoy many native dishes such as atole, carnitas, pozole, sopa Tarasca and special tasty desert dishes and pastry. The Hotel Plaza Uruapan has fine dining to satisfy all taste buds.
The Parque National is just five blocks from the main plaza. It has hundreds of water falls, some God made and others by humans. These are created as the Rio Cupatitzio rushes though the city.
Semana Santa (Holy Week) is a special time to be in Uruapan. Artesans from over 20 villages come to exhibit and sell their wares, filling the four block long main plaza. These range from copper items from Santa Clara del Cobre, guitars from Paracho, wood carvings from Pichaturo, ceramic dishes from the shores of lake Patzcuaro, Pineapple sculpture from Patamban, primitive sculpture form Ochumicho and from URUAPAN a special type of lacquer like plate.
There are parades including the blessing of the palms. At night dancers come from Uruapan’s eight barrios to perform at the Casa de La Cultura. On Palm Sunday Purepecha people will be on the patios of the two main churches, near the main plaza. These ate Inmaculada and San Francisco They will also be seen at the Huatepera. This building was the oldest hospital in the America’s for Indigenes people. The patios will be lined with embroidered articles for sale. At the Fabrica de San Pedro, winning works of crafts will be seen and also available for sale.
ACCOMODATION: If you want to be in the center of the action, Casa Serenity is the best place to stay. It is a nearly 450 year old adobe, historic home. On Calle Corregidora it is a short walk to all of the activities, you will want to enjoy. Check out the web site www.casaserenity1.com

Our B&B is here on the beach in Rosarito. We would love to see members of Mexico - My Space come to visit us at Casa Farolito.. You are always welcomed with a frozen Margarita. We give members a gift certificate for 'dinner for two' at a local restaurant. We also offer mosaic tile classes in our courtyard and private oceanfront massages. See us at www.casafarolito.com

Uruapan is a place of many crafts people, avocados, mountains and tall pine trees. It has a very special culture with the Purepecha Indians. This year is speclial for Michoacan. It is on RUTA 2010. Morelia the state Capital is the birthplace of Morelia and a real colonial jewel. Uruapan is a short drive from Patzcuaro and many other charming villages.
There is a 450 year old home that is available for rent. It was once the home of the half brother of President Lazero Cardenas ( 1934 -1940) Check out

Thanks Frank. You are the first B&B owner to offer a discount to our members. I had expected someone to do it sooner. I do hope that some of our members will take you up on the offer.
