Anything going on on Christmas Day or will the town be shut down for family time?

We have been traveling since July and missed the action. Stefanie Kott who is a member seems like she would be a good source of information. Hope you enjoy your visit. Oaxaca is truly special and wonderful!

Heading down mid December to mid January - any updates on the earthquake?
Stefanie Kott Comment by Stefanie Kott on September 8, 2009 at 9:09am
There was a 5.1 earthquake throughout the state of Oaxaca with 27 confirmed dead so far. There are few specifics about the city. You can check throughout the day at: www.imparoax.com.mx/index.html

Meanwhile there is an article here: http://www.disastercenter.com/earthqk/OAXACA.htm

Alan,

10 am tickets to the Guelaguetza, yes. No rain. But the nighttime performance is different: La Leyenda de Donaji. It's spectacular and might be worth taking a chance.

Well, "it" started on Sunday, not the 12th.

One Dead, 8 Injured in Explosion on 3rd Anniversary of Oaxaca Revolt

OAXACA, Mexico – One person died and eight were injured when a car transporting fireworks and gasoline for use in making Molotov cocktails exploded in the southern Mexican city of Oaxaca during violence on the third anniversary of the six-month revolt here in 2006, union officials said on Sunday.

Re Guelaguetza: With all due respect to Stephanie, it DOES matter which day or night you attend the actual Guelaguetza performance. Guelaguetza happens in the rainy season. It rarely rains until the afternoon in July. Therefore, you're almost entirely assured of great weather if you buy 10 am tickets. I can't recall a rainy morning Guelaguetza between 1991 and now. The Guelaguetzas were traditionally in the mornings only. About 3 - 4 years ago, as a cash grab the government decided to add afternoon performances. At the same time there was discussion about putting a roof over the open air auditorium, and presumably that wisdom had something to do with adding afternoon performances. However, thankfully no roof has been put up as of yet. Only those who have been at the Guelaguetza can understand my thoughts about it ... unless of course it's simply a top which does not detract from the spectacular views of the city and mountains. If you can't get good morning seats, take an umbrella, light rain poncho, etc. And for the morning performances, a sombrilla, hat, etc. Get seats as close to the stage as possible, to increase your chances of being able to participate in trying to catch the goodies tossed at the end of each performance. It's an added bonus.

Oaxaca, Mexico, Food Review: La Casa de los Sabores Cooking School
Posted on 08 June 2009

Alvin Starkman, M.A., LL.B.

If visitors to Oaxacan cooking school La Casa de los Sabores came away with nothing more than great recipes and a gastronomic meal rich in unique herb- and spice-accented flavor combinations that are the hallmark of Oaxacan cuisine, they would leave fully satisfied. But a visit with owner and chef extraordinaire Pilar Cabrera also inspires and sates travelers with a sensual day-long immersion into sights, sounds, smells and, yes, tastes and time-tested recipes of southern Mexico.

I got a note from Gloria about the Guelaguetza at the end of July.

It IS important to have tickets before you get here. I found this on the Internet: http://74.125.155.132/search?q=cache:YZIA2nnbj3wJ:oaxacalive.com/askmaria/+%22buy+tickets%22+guelaguetza+oaxaca+2009&cd=6&hl=en&ct=clnk

It's everything you ever wanted to know about the Guelaguetza (I think).

Oaxaca throws an incredible party. Every day something's going on that's free and entertaining. Just the Guelaguetza itself, on those two Mondays and the celebration of Donaji Monday nights, cost money. You'll see people in native dress everywhere, spontaneous dances from individual regions, and a fabulous parade the Saturday afternoon before the shows.

It doesn't matter which day or night you see a ticketed performance. Every dance group accepted for the Guelaguetza is terrific. The nighttime performance is usually professional, choreographed, and beautiful.
