San Carlos, located in the Mexico state of Sonora lies on the Gulf of California. It is roughly about a five to six hour drive from the US border (six to seven hours from Tucson). It is only a short drive from the port city of Guaymas. This is a very popular destination among Americans and Canadians mainly in the winter due to its extremely hot summers. The area in recent years has also seen a spike in real estate as many are flocking to retire here.

I spent a weekend in San Carlos in July 2008. Despite the heat, there are of plenty of ways to have fun and cool off. Sure everyone wants to lie on the sandy beaches but, there are tons of other water activities including diving, fishing, sailing and snorkeling. Not only is the sea amazing, but there are many incredible mountains to view. For deep sea excursions, I personally recommend Gary’s Boat Trips. I did the Combo Trip which included both fishing and snorkeling. All the fishing and snorkeling gear are provided and complimentary soft drinks and fish tacos are served on board. The total trip is five hours and cost $85.

By the end of the day you’ll have most likely exhausted all your energy so it’s the perfect time to hit one of the many restaurants and cantinas. Relax with a Tecate or Margarita and listen to some jamming tunes. Mark Mulligan is an American originally from Nashville, Tennessee who now resides in San Carlos. When he’s not on tour he can usually be found performing at one of the local beachfront hotels. His music is geared for all ages and a great place to take your kids and family to have a good time.

Of course there is no shortage of gift shops to browse. Great restaurants featuring fresh seafood, Mexican cuisine and even American dishes are plentiful in San Carlos. Finding a place to stay is rather easy as the area offers many hotels and private home rentals with prices for every budget.

So you might wanna reconsider that trip to Tijuana and head to San Carlos instead!

Thanks for posting, and you're absolutely right about Ceneval (the exam discussed in the original blog) needing to take us into consideration and also about the lack of training. I wish we had a mandatory exam, which would go something like this...Q…
