"Pecho al suelo"..."Get down!" or "Hit the deck!" (literally, "chest to the floor/ground"). Hope none of you hears this!
on Thursday
For the first couple of years we lived in Mexico, my husband and I were confused when we heard the following: ¡'Pérame tantito! and "Porfa" We later learned these are shorthand forms of ¡Espérame tantito!(Wait for me a minute) and "Por favor" (p...

I've heard women call good-looking men "Bon-Bon". Men also use it to refer to good-looking women (also, "Mamacita"). I hadn't heard "taco de ojos" before. What a great description! Have heard "Muy sexy" to refer to good-looking members of both s...

Buenos dias Cindi! I would like to order the ten current rental listings published in The Chopper. If you can send me your PayPal account name (email address) I will post $10.00 to your account. Any comments regarding the different barrios would be greatly appreciated! We plan on being in GTO for a minium of two months and possibly (probably) longer. I am getting concerned since the little I have found on the internet (including Dona Ana's casitas) are already booked starting Dec. 1st. We plan on arriving just before Thanksgiving. We believe in being "on site" before commiting to a rental since we have had some not-so-good experiences trusting internet listings (and their misleading photos, etc.). Muchas, muchas gracias! Laura

Hola Cindi! I have spent a rainy day here on the Pacific Coast of Mexico, but it was all worth while because I found your "Survival Guide to GTO" exert while I was surfing rental information for Guanajuato. I wanted to tell you and your husband Doug that I found it completely wonderful! Your take on living in Mexico as an expat and specifically Guanajuato was informative, entertaining, and right on. As my husband and I have spent the last thirteen years living full time in Mexico and other Latin American countries I could completely relate. We are still renters and have yet to "settle down" and buy. We are really looking forward to GTO and I hope we can get together to share experiences and have a good laugh. Saludos, Laura

Many thanks, Cindi! We have been studying our Mexico maps this morning and plotting our routing (which is always subject to multiple revisions!). I will check out your links. I bet you are gearing up for the Cervantes Festival as we speak. Have a great time. Laura

Buenos dias Cindi! My name is Laura and I have just joined the GTO group. My husband and I will be coming to Guanajuato in November and will be looking for an apartment to rent in the city. I have read your previous advice to others and appreciate the links that you have sited. Thank you very much for your suggestions! We were last in GTO two days after 9-11 so we are looking forward to this new visit. Any additional recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Gracias y saludos!

Hi Cindi
We ended up here pretty much by accident... intended on living by the ocean near Manzanillo or Barra de Navidad, as my husband wanted to do ocean sailing. However we couldn't find a place to live with 4 dogs in tow! He had also driven thru this area and thought it was pretty, and so I got on the yahoo groups and posted for a rental - got 3 offers in less than one day! I guess it was meant to be?!? It is really pretty here, and the weather suits us I think better than the heat by the ocean!

My husband and I moved to Guanajuato, the capital of the state of Guanajuato, in 2003. We've both become writers (long-time dreams for both of us) since moving to Mexico and have co-authored two books about living in Mexico. My husband's newest book is a guidebook/travelogue for the city of Guanajuato (I helped him with the research as well as with the editing and proofreading). All the books are available at Amazon.com or through our web site.

Right now, I'm contributing to my husband's blog...mainly with information about foods that were unfamiliar to us when we moved to Mexico, but also some restaurant and hotel reviews from some of our trips. I'm also working on a fiction novel.

I'd be happy to try to answer questions about Guanajuato and the surrounding area. Our web site (www.mexican-living-guanajuato.com) has lots of information as well. My husband updates it frequently.

Free or Cheap Things to Do in Guanajuato, Mexico

Guanajuato, Mexico is an important colonial town with much to see and experience. Fortunately for those on a budget, Guanajuato offers many free or cheap things to do to make your vacation fun.

Get a map of Guanajuato from the tourist office and take a walking tour of the historic center. The map indicates museums, churches, plazas, and other places of interest. Be sure to take a look at the grand houses surrounding both the Jardín de la Unión and Plaza de la Paz. These were built by the wealth… Continue
