We left Silicon Valley in 2000 with our hair on fire.
We bought a house, rehabbed it and sold it 5 years later. In that time I have been writing for the local English Language paper, the Gringo Gazette, International Living, and Mexico Insider.
I have sold real estate and continued originating mortgages in California from La Paz, until 2005.
In 2005 we built our dream home on the beach. It is now for sale.
I went to work for ConfiCasa Mortgage doing loans for Americans and Canadians seeking to finance Mexican properties. I left them in September 2008 and am happy that I did.
I write, I sew, I collect shells, love to cook, love to read, and am ready to find a new place to live.
I rent my guesthouse, the "HoneyMoon Hut".
My husband is the science editor at a federal (MX) research agency located at the end of our beach.

The Beaches are FREE!

The Beaches are Free!
Oh yes they are. In Mexico the beaches must always be accessible to anyone that would like to use them…on foot. Just as in California, Oregon, Washington and points north, driving on the beach is illegal and carries a huge fine.
Here in Baja California Sur where the law is fluid, and the local police are not highly trained, the words “the beaches are free” translates to: drive anything, do anything, and leave your garbage which includes dirty diapers ON THE BEACH! We have h… Continue

Jimena, You left Us Already?

Last night, around 7:00 p.m. as I was serving dinner of poached salmon on a bed of spinach, the lights dimmed. Deeply. Meaning they went off completely, then came back they did this three or four times. I had already lit candles for dinner, so there was no need to run around looking for them.

Darling Husband decided to get the bags of ice from the guesthouse refrigerator. "I don't want to lug them in the pouring rain and screaming wind" said he. And the rain and wind we had earlier in the day c… Continue

Yes, Susan, my web site is www.mexicomike.com. Have had it since 1986. Excuse me for not knowing, but could you send me some information about your book? Thanks. Oh and I would be interested in talking to you privately about your experiences with ConfiCasa. I, too, was in that business for awhile. Since you say you are happy you left, I suspect our experiences may have been similar.

Hey there,
Thanks again for the recommendation to MMS. George is delightful and very welcoming. I noticed the string regarding the SMA shoes. Not only does Martha make the combat/cocktail sandal others have referred to, she also make the best tacónes. The 3-4 inch heel is a knock off from Prada and can withstand any SMA cobble stone street without fear of twisted ankles and broken shoes. They are now the only shoes I buy. Looking forward to your visit!
Best, Wendy
