Living in Los Cabos: Oh Happy Day!

Everyone in Los Cabos is smiling today. The Spanish-speaking population call it ‘el cambio de clima’, the Gringos describe it as ‘God pulling the switch’, but in whatever language it’s cause for a celebration. This morning at about 2AM we moved from summer to winter in about 10 minutes. I’ve lived in environments know to have capricious climates, but Cabo’s 10 minute fall season takes the cake.
It happens this way every year: sometime in the latter half of October, in the wee hours of the morning, a strong wind starts blowing. Within minutes the temperature drops about 15 degrees or so, you wake up freezing and go in search of the blankets you put away last June. And the next morning you wake up to a fresh, cool dry breeze and sunny skies. That’s our version of winter.
Even though we had the best summer in mine or anyone else’s memory this year by mid-October we’re ready for the change of the seasons. We go from somewhat warm (ok, ok, it’s hot but no worse than most places) and sunny with a slight chance of a tropical storm and the humidity it brings to the perfect weather for which we are justifiably famous. There will be a few chilly nights in late December and January when you’ll want a sweater or light jacket; but the days are perfectly comfortable. In February we have what we call our windy season, the weather is still sunny and the temperature pleasant but the breezes are strong and may call for a light wrap. Sssh, don’t tell anyone, but June is one of our prettiest months and a treat for the locals once most of the tourists are gone. Sometime in mid-July it will start to warm up (nothing quite so dramatic as a 10-minute fall season) and then we’re into three months of summer. As a climate goes, this is plentifully perfect.
Sociologists who study such things have declared that Mexico is the happiest country in the world. I’ll vouch for the accuracy of their findings. The reasons for that happiness are many and complex, but surely the climate helps. And today, we’re all celebrating. Viva la Clima!
