Hi Alvin,

Since you took those wonderful pictures of the sand sculptures, the Malecón (boardwalk) in Puerto Vallarta has been completely transformed. The whole thing was torn up during the last 6 months and a brand new sea wall, walkway, trees, street mosaics, planters, outdoor theater, etc. has been added. All of the 'old' statues/sculptures, that the tourists love, have been put back but possibly in  different locations.  Part of the malecon, from the Hotel Rosita to the Lighthouse, is all one level (meaning no sidewalk-street separation), while the area from the Lighthouse to the Church is still elevated above street level. It's much more wheelchair friendly and can accomodate a large amount of people. They had the Grand Opening on Oct. 16th. It wasn't quite finished then but it's just about all done now (Oct. 23rd).

I just walked the whole thing yesterday and I didn't come across the area where the sand scuplture guys will be doing their art. I did find the rock 'piling' artists (the guys that balance rocks one on top of the other). They're near the pedestrian bridge over the Rio Cuale.  I'll try to keep my eye out for the sand sculptures and report back. They are amazingly detailed works of art and the Malecón just wouldn't be the same without them.

Check out www.BanderasNews.com ( Aug.10th posting) "Three More Blocks of Vallarta Malecón Open" . It's a slideshow showing the progress.

They are also building a new pier at Los Muertos beach (supposedly to be finished in January) and digging a new tunnel (for car traffic) next to the old one on Calle Libramiento. They tore down the old ramshackle house near the Sheraton Hotel and built a new white stadium for the PanAmerican Volleyball tournament.  Lots of new things in Vallarta.

Salud,

Sue
